The second installment in the epic Starbound trilogy introduces a new pair of star-crossed lovers on two sides of a bloody war.

Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac should never have met.

Lee is captain of the forces sent to Avon to crush the terraformed planet’s rebellious colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating the insurgents.

Rebellion is in Flynn’s blood. Terraforming corporations make their fortune by recruiting colonists to make the inhospitable planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon, and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion.

Desperate for any advantage in a bloody and unrelentingly war, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and Lee cross paths: he returns to base with her as prisoner. But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape the rebel base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war.

With the influx of fantasy novels lately, I needed a good science fiction book to break up my usual fantasy/contemporary mix. I really loved These Broken Stars, so I knew This Shattered World was going to be an instant love with me. While I did love the book, I didn’t quite like it as much These Broken Stars.

This Shattered World picks up about 8 months after the events of These Broken Stars, but it features two new characters. Theres Jubilee Chase, who is the military golden child. Then theres Flynn Cormac, part of a rebellious group who just want a better life for their planet. These two are naturally at odds, especially when Flynn takes Jubilee back to his home. But with the threat of war looming between their two sides, they race against the clock to find the truth about whats really happening on their planet, Avon. They discover that they have more in common than they thought.

What I really love about these books is that they focus on the main plot of the conspiracy revolving around the sickened planet of Avon. Based on the cover, I would have assumed that it was mainly a love story, and thats what I did assume before I started the series. But the book relies heavily on science, action, war, etc. There is romance, don’t get me wrong. But at times of high pressure, love can take the back burner. Which I think it should, and these books respect that. When I finished These Broken Stars, I was left a bit disappointed because I felt like I got no answers in terms of the conspiracy surrounding LaRoux industries. I was a little bit more okay with that because I knew that there were more books coming in the series and the answers would follow. Since I knew about the conspiracy already, I felt like it was easier for me to look for clues while reading. Its made me excited for book number 3, which comes out in December.

I really like the rebel aspect of This Shattered World. In These Broken Stars, all that really separated Tarver and Lilac was the fact that they were from different social circles. But in This Shattered World, they were from different worlds. Different sides of the battle field. It was great to see the story come together in the end, to find out that they were fighting for the same thing, the same truth. They just had different ways of going about the situation.

The cameo from Tarver and Lilac was great. I get the feeling that they’re going to be back again in book 3 because they appear to be investigating the conspiracy surrounding LaRoux Industries.

I think the reason why I didn’t like This Shattered World as much was the fact that I loved the conspiracy that unraveled in book one. So once things were revealed, it was this big shock to me. It wasn’t as big of a shock to me in book 2, and quite frankly I was waiting for it. It was just a matter of time before it was revealed. Also, the beginning of the book dragged a little bit, but once the action picked up, I was really sucked into the book.
I’m excited for the sequel to come out this December. It’ll be the final book, so I’m expecting everything to be revealed and for there to be lots of action. Its going to be great to see all 6 characters coming together to expose this big conspiracy thats been building.

If you love science fiction, space travel, far off worlds, I definitely recommend this one.
