Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books. Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures that only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive.
Last summer, Mackenzie Bishop, a Keeper tasked with stopping violent Histories from escaping the Archive, almost lost her life to one. Now, as she starts her junior year at Hyde School, she’s struggling to get her life back. But moving on isn’t easy — not when her dreams are haunted by what happened. She knows the past is past, knows it cannot hurt her, but it feels so real, and when her nightmares begin to creep into her waking hours, she starts to wonder if she’s really safe.
Meanwhile, people are vanishing without a trace, and the only thing they seem to have in common is Mackenzie. She’s sure the Archive knows more than they are letting on, but before she can prove it, she becomes the prime suspect. And unless Mac can track down the real culprit, she’ll lose everything, not only her role as Keeper, but her memories, and even her life. Can Mackenzie untangle the mystery before she herself unravels?
With stunning prose and a captivating mixture of action, romance, and horror, The Unbound delves into a richly imagined world where no choice is easy and love and loss feel like two sides of the same coin.
*This book is a sequel to The Archived. I highly suggest that you see me review of that book first before reading this one because the two books are tightly intertwined, and you will feel lost if you do not read the first. If you have read the first, or are interested in reading the whole series, continue reading!
I finally got my hands on the sequel! I loved The Archived because it was such a unique book. The Unbound continued with this unique world, and made it even more complicated by adding high school to the mix. And oh boy did things get messy.
So The Unbound picks up a few weeks after the events of The Archived. Mackenzie is still dealing with the aftereffects and is having terrible dreams. Unfortunately, her dreams are starting to come into her reality, and people that she comes across are starting to go missing. And so once again, Mackenzie has another mystery to solve. However, can she pull it off? She’s on a tight leash with the Archive and she has to keep up with her normal life of attending a new school as well. Can she solve the mystery or will she lose her mind first?
The world that Mackenzie lives in is a complicated one, and I’ve explained most of it in my review of the first book, so you can check it out here. What I love about these books is that they are so action packed. When I read the first book, I was having a little bit of trouble with it because I didn’t know what to expect, and I didn’t get hooked until half way through. However, with reading the sequel, I feel like I was hooked from the beginning. It basically is a continuation from the ending of the first book, and so the action just keeps coming. I wanted to solve the mystery so badly, that I would read 100 pages in one sitting. I think once you’re hooked into these books, you’re hooked. It just took me a while to get a good grip on how to read these books, and now that I’ve mastered it, I’m in for the ride.
Another thing that I was happy about, was the love story. You could feel the starting of a love story with Wes, Mackenzie’s archive partner, but it never really went anywhere. Things start to pick up, and theres actually a love triangle! Well, its more of a skewed triangle, but nonetheless, the love plot picks up, and I’m happy for it.
This was a great squeal to the first book, and if you’re a fan of the first book, I’m sure that you’ll love this one. It was just as action packed, and better than the first.
